Films about family #Mistakenforstrangers and #thelegomovie

Over the last two weeks I have seen two films. Thats good going for me, normally I get to see a 5 or 6 childrens films and 1or2 non family friendly films a year in the cinema. And generally it ranks in this way

Aardman films, rare quality with humour and delight.
Pixar films, very good generally.
Big films, (christopher nolans batman films, lord of the rings series, etc.) usually good towards very good.
Other childrens films, usually bland to ok with notable standouts, cloudy chance of meatballs, the first shrek, frozen and tangled. But normally not great.

So with great pleasure I have to report seeing two movies with asked questions of me. Questions which both made me laugh, made me think and asked me to evaluate myself against my perceptions of who i am.

First up was the lego movie.

It started well with a psychedelic style sequence within the first ten minutes, marking out that this isn’t just a lego sales pitch (of course thats part of it). As a movie it is quality, it is well scripted, well designed and features several changes of pace that seemed just right for the movie. The producers of the movie did a the similar trick with the cloudy with a chance of meatballs series of movies. Special mention must go to an unexpected end sequence. It is perhaps the strangest and most satisfying part of the film. It puts the film back into perspective and sks questions of those watching, and left me wondering How i act, and where i think things are. As a film the whole thing can be read many ways, and I am concious that I read into it, and yes it pressed certain buttons for me, but as a satifying movie experience I liked it immensely.

The second film was Mistaken for Strangers, shown as part of the Glasgow Film Festival.

What can I say about mistaken for strangers. First despite it being a film about a rock band on the cusp of superstardom, it isnt really about the band. The band provide the backdrop and the most of the soundtrack but its a wider stories about brothers, and family. Following one brothers attempt to work on a year long world tour. its in thetrailer that thing may not work out as well as expected. Beyond this it is very enjoyable, and really funny. Very funny indeed. In the same way you don’t have to be a sister to relate to the charactors in frozen, you dont have to have a brother to get the questions this film is askin,. or see the humor in this film. It was really good and I really enjoyed it.

Both these films have asked me questions about who I am, how I relate to others in my family. Both have been part of an enjoyable process to ask these questions and I suppose thats what art should be, something which asks you questions and allows space for the consideration of answers. For that I am truely thankful to both films.

Also got a meeting on Wednesday in Edinburgh

Main Idea In Your Hand
the personal cocoon.
after using libraries for a while i love the idea of an invisible portable personal cocoon which could surround you and ensure you are always in a space of comfort and joy despite the randomness of who can be sitting near or with you!
(retail around £50 each, you would make a fortune!

Best laid plans:
went to see Andrew Bird on Thursday at Oran Mor
genius. unbelievable, genius!

I don’t wanna:
have our house invaded today!

A collection of Literature:
not much reading this week. still on zizek though.

Was at the Andrew Bird concert on Thursday so have spent most of Thursday and Friday listening to andrew bird! if in doubt, listen here.

currently I am listening to the one of the top three radio shows currently available in the UK, Adam and Joe on 6music!

White noise 16 (15’s on holiday)

nb. – White Noise is an attempt to provide a weekly update on my life.

Last week/this week:
Last week we were on holiday. so for the next few days we are holidaying at home.
which will be grand! back to work on Wednesday

Last weekend we were privileged to attend the wedding of Jenn & Jim. They were both on the team I went to Tanzania with a couple of years ago. I also don’t mean to blow my own trumpet but i did play a small role in getting them together initially. Had a good couple of days around Kettering and stonkingly good weather day for the wedding in the small village of Orlingbury. We then went to Centre Parcs at Sherwood forest for some relax time. we really did relax and not do alot. it was nice to go for a walk sometimes, stay in some time, eat out, eat in, have ducks and geese and moor hens also confident being around humans. (Yip they were scrounging mostly but confident neither the less.)

This week we have the holiday continuing until Wednesday then back to the old routine, I think I am in Easterhouse on Wednesday, working from home on Thursday and in Easterhouse on Friday but all that could change!

Main Idea In Your Hand
The main idea I am working on is around thePROJECT:two More details to follow hopefully sometime in the following week.

Best laid plans:
For the wedding I hired the full kilt outfit. it’s a wedding, it’s what you do. so we went away down to see the wedding in a beautiful wee village down south, i noted we seemed to be photographed quite alot. I didn’t get how much we should be noticed for our dress. At it’s most pronounced, as i was walking along a village street a family walked towards me, the young girl in the family, started waving to me as i walked towards them, she had never seen someone in a kilt outfit before and was waving to check i was real and see if i would wave back. (I did.) it did feel quite weird in a lot of ways.
Stranger still when we returned to the hotel, a different photographer with a different wedding stopped me as asked for a couple of shots. Apparently I looked so proud and noble! so who knows where my shots will end up but if you are looking through a wedding catalogue or summit similar, and see a slightly confused, noble and proud looking guy in a kilt outfit, that’s probably me!

I don’t wanna:
go back to work.
having time off has been really nice

A collection of Literature:
Reading chapter three of Slavoj ZIZek’s “the fragile absolute.” the chapter where he talks about coke and diet coke, and caffeine free diet coke being the ultimate symbol of consumerisms oppression of society. gentle holiday reading obviously.

The main song I have been listening to is “Gimme Shelter by the rolling stones due it seemingly being used on adverts everywhere.

5 words to describe how i am feeling:
relaxed, chilled, happy, thinking, tired.

white noise 14 (white noise 12 & 13 are M.I.A.)

nb. – White Noise is an attempt to provide a weekly update on my life.

Last week/this week:
been a strange one.

with work being a building site and alternative accommodation being unconducive to doing work of any kind. I have been working from home. Monday i was on site, Tuesday i was at home. Wednesday we had a break in and a food parcel request so back in Easterhouse, Thursday home and Friday being a holiday was a day of lazing about and playing with Jacob. quite nice really.
also this week i helped out a couple of days with the holiday club in church at lanark. it was really enjoyable. it is was partly some of what Carberry used to give me.
I also did the service on Thursday at the church. it was an interesting experience which i will blog about subsequently.

next week
well today we are at the continental market in Lanark High Street then having friends over – Fraser and Rachel.
tomorrow we are at the Lanark loch walk and Easter Sunday service in the morning and with my wives family for an Easter meal.
Monday is a holiday.
then working through the week. lots of admin stuff about to do next week.

Main Idea In Your Hand
(more a problem than an idea) feedback – how can you give real time feedback to someone who is delivering a speech or talk, yeah text or twitter maybe there, but for the majority of people in the communities i work with, twitter is not an option. Maybe a text but that is kinda problematic. How do we give feedback to those who talk?
any ideas?

Best laid plans:
getting addicted to The Wire. it’s not on fridays. somehow i feel listless and uncomfortable. Should i really be this into a TV program?
The wire is kinda weird. it is just like, NYPD Blue, Law and Order, CSI, but feels like a different world to them all. the stand alone, yet on going drama. It is familiar enough to be comfortable veiwing, but it is different enough to be somewhere else. quite amazing TV.

I don’t wanna:
do admin.
I think i am uninspired

A collection of Literature:
not done much reading this week to be honest

just the ipod on shuffle.
nothing really caught me this week
OH – except a fantastic remix of Britney spears maneater. honestly the thing is wonderful. it is stunning.
I will find it again and blog the details. unusual but wonderful.

5 words to describe how i am feeling:
tired, relaxed, worried, happy, unsure.

White Noise 10 – (late is as late does)

nb. – White Noise is an attempt to provide a weekly update on my life.

Last week/this week:
Last week started with a juggernaut being delayed, not stopped or avoided. Change is gonna come, and it can be good. (constantly remind yourself!)
Wednesday evening i ended up meeting up with Rich and Lynzy to go see Howling Bells at the classic grand. a review blog post to follow!. Thursday and Friday seemed very busy indeed.

Saturday morning I spent at the Scottish national woodworking and power tool show at the SECC. (Yeah it was kinda like an episode of Home Improvement with men grunting and shouting More power with ever tool that was started.) Saturday afternoon I fitted cupboard doors at my borthers house and Saturday evening i was home.

Sunday I was at home. managed to get the garden partly turned for a forthcoming potato harvest.
Sunday evening I was struggling with the tech stuff at Third Sunday. We had everything. speakers in the house system that wouldn’t work, dodgy cables, i broke my own cables, we went through 4 laptops, in the end i think it went okay but to be honest I struggled to cope with so much happening due to the short set up time.

today i ended up reading up religious observance stuff from the Scottish executive, thinking about what to do tomorrow, and in school.

tomorrow i have schools work, and meetings, Wednesday i have meetings most of the day and night. a club in the evening. On Thursday I will probably work from home on the Thursday morning, and have a BSGE youth network meeting on the evening with the traditional Friday down time to make the week end well.
(sounds quite busy!)

Main Idea In Your Hand
Pub quiz team. (we could win cash and stuff)

Best laid plans:
got the train home on Wednesday after the Howling Bells gig. at the second last stop I called for a taxi. The man asked how long, He suggested 15-30 mins. I said no 5-10mins and I will be there. he said okay. We pulled into the station about 7 mins later, i got off the train at Lanark train station and headed to the taxi rink, guess what, no taxi.

I headed down the end of the rink where the road is. I spotted a silver car heading into teh car park of the supermarket next to the train station. as I waited and no taxi appeared i considered starting to walk or calling the company again. The gray car appeared, the guys saw me standing and the three young men in the car beckoned me over to their car. At the same time a taxi drove in, and stopped across the rank from me.

I walked towards the taxi, at first it looked like i was heading to the boys car. they started encouraging slogans out the window at me. As i walked by their car to the taxi, the abuse started to become more prominent. by the time i reached the taxi, I did think I needed to check they hadn’t exited the car. The taxi man had no knowledge of me as as we chatted the silver car drove off at speed. (shouting abuse at me mostly.)

The taxi guy got confirmation of my booking and i did get home but… for the first time i wasn’t confident in my own ability to deal with a situation. I am not sure about why that was. But I didn’t like it.

I don’t wanna:
wake up on time tomorrow. sleeping til 10am would be nice!

A collection of Literature:
still on the Zizek, Bible and curriculum for excellence from the scottish executive!

U2 (rock), Steve Earle (alt. country), Martyn Joseph (singer/songwriter-Folk), Howling Bells(indie rock), John Coltrane (Classic Jazz). random but good collection this week.

5 words to describe how i am feeling:
tired, happy, excited, satisfied, uncreative?

White Noise 9

nb. – White Noise is an attempt to provide a weekly update on my life.

Last week/this week:
Last week i watched a juggernaut hit around thursday. the full impact will be decided in the meetings on Monday but an imprint has threatened to wipe quite a lot out.
Monday was good, Tuesday long, Wednesday fun, Thursday busy, Friday unending. (so no lunch)
I did manage to start getting my contact lenses sorted, and have some conversations about things. by Friday night i was quite tired so we went out for dinner, and i put Jacob to bed around 8.30, i also went to bed at 8.30pm, I did get up at 9.30pm and ended up downstairs telling my wife i would probably just go to bed! when she came up around 11.30pm I was asleep and Jacob was wide awake. great parenting there!

this week coming up will decide some things. Monday decides our short term future and also our medium strategic future.
Tuesday as normal is busy, Wednesday and Thursday we have an additional child protection audit for work, Friday I am at a Glasgow city council school chaplaincy presentation and Saturday i sleep!

Main Idea In Your Hand
how can we explain the chrisitanity in an easy way. So far i have,
1. Christians believe the bible.
2. Christians have freedom not to agree on everything.
3. Freedom brings responsibly.
trying to work out where to go with it next

Best laid plans:
My bank account change to the co-op bank from RBS is hopefully all working well, but I guess that the real test comes as all the direct debits and standing orders attempt to extract themselves this month. more on this as it happens. next plan is to open an ISA, and cancel my primary credit card to bring my banking to a more managable level.

I don’t wanna:
find out much of what we are due to find out this next week. But I am looking forward to heading to the howling bells concert in town on wednesday.

A collection of Literature:
starting the ZIzek blog blogged about in the post below.
(Q. do you read the preface to a new edition before reading the text?)

Modest Mouse, Pulp, Miles Davis and Laconic Hegemony 1 & 2.

5 words to describe how i am feeling:
refreshed, sanguine, changed, edgy, unsure.

White Noise 7

nb. – White Noise is an attempt to provide a weekly update on my life.

Last week/this week:
last week finished well with visits to both grandparents for Jacob! And a first walk down the beach for us all. nice.

this week i have some work to do and some stuff to catch up on.
Joint publicity for Youth info Points
Third Sunday publicity
Aga for kitchen (v.excited)
Hair cut!
Potato seeds
and various other things!

Main Idea In Your Hand
Making application forms which show you company/organisation actually has considered how they will be interpreted by others.
On prominent organisation needs forms filled out by potential volunteers. I agree with this, but the questions are worded in such as way that I protest about being judged on those criteria. Where and when did you become a christian. I never will become a christian until the next life as it it a now and not yet statement there fore how can one become something which is not realised until some sort of afterlife?

Best laid plans:
If forgot to take my conditioner when I had a shower during the weekend. My hair went everywhere! not a great plan to be honest.

I don’t wanna:
sort out the office upstairs. It is a mess which has become a dumping ground but it does need done!

A collection of Literature:
I still haven’t started a book yet. I have found a number of back issues of iCreate magazine and Web designer which I should possibly read. I got through two editions yesterday so only four more to go! I am thinking I should pick a book for Lent this year? any suggestions

I really got into the fantastic bruce coburn song, pacing the cage lyrics below!

Sunset is an angel weeping
Holding out a bloody sword
No matter how I squint I cannot
Make out what it’s pointing toward
Sometimes you feel like you live too long
Days drip slowly on the page
You catch yourself
Pacing the cage

I’ve proven who I am so many times
The magnetic strip’s worn thin
And each time I was someone else
And every one was taken in
Powers chatter in high places
Stir up eddies in the dust of rage
Set me to pacing the cage

I never knew what you all wanted
So I gave you everything
All that I could pillage
All the spells that I could sing
It’s as if the thing were written
In the constitution of the age
Sooner or later you’ll wind up
Pacing the cage

Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You can’t see what’s round the bend
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend
Today these eyes scan bleached-out land
For the coming of the outbound stage
Pacing the cage
Pacing the cage

5 words to describe how i am feeling:
good, tired, sleepy, purposeful, bouyed.

White Noise 5

nb. – White Noise is an attempt to provide a weekly update on my life.

Last week/this week:
Last week
I got birthday presents from my parents, 3 dvd’s i had been looking for. I booked my travel for the staff conference, I worked from Home, got the car serviced, attended the first Steering group meeting for The Project, spent time at home with Jacob, spoke a little to Sarah. generally a packed and busy week. Sadly this week we had to cancel some clubs as our heating couldn’t cope with the cold temperatures. not good.
next week
tomorrow i head to London (dependent on weather!) to see the Byzantine exhibition at the royal academy of Arts I am staying in a discounted hotel room on Sunday evening, and on Monday catching the train to derby, (weather permitting). Then heading to the FORGE conference hosted by Alove
back on Wednesday evening, working Thursday and Friday then off Saturday then working at Third Sunday on Sunday. Then another week begins!

Main Idea In Your Hand
How does the typeface we use shape our understanding of what it is we are reading/buying/advertising.
(I watched the film Helvetica which i got for my birthday – Yes a documentary film about a Typeface. On of the key things it outlines is how one Typeface can be so dominant and yet be interpreted in so many different ways. The back story is fascinating the socio/political/historical context of its development is very intresting. I really enjoyed the film. I may have to go back and re watch it a couple of times!)

Best laid plans:
The car needed a service, well the in car computer had put the service light on. I thought there was something about the next service being at 60,000 miles but we hadn’t reached that mythical figure yet.
I booked it in, arranged to work from home, and on Thursday morning took it to the garage. I took the bus home. The bus didn’t go all the way to our town stopping at the town in between our town and the garage. I walked though the snow and waited for the next bus.
Before it could come the garage called. I was right about the next service being at 60k miles. They had carried out a 30 point visual inspection, reset the service light and I could have it back. straight away. So i headed back got the car and was home before 10am. (Praise for the customer service at Verve Wishaw. Quick, efficient and a quality service. well done indeed. it is a good dealership experience.)

This plan worked very well and i really enjoyed working and keeping the log fire going in the living room. It was a great plan.

I don’t wanna:
go to the staff training thing. this will be my first work staff conference thing since i started working there. It could be fun but also could be terrible. I might get snowed in London and not be able to make it!

A collection of Literature:
i am catching up on my bible reading, (i am in late January) I will finish the Volf this week and will start something else next week. I am actually quite excited about picking the book i will read next!

I have been listening to
Iain Archer – To the pine roots,
Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago

Kevin Max – The Blood

5 words to describe how i am feeling:
excited, nervous, sad, troubled, calm

White Noise 3 (late, a bit llike this week)

nb. – White Noise is an attempt to provide a weekly update on my life.

Last week/this week:
last week was fun but very busy.
I was out with work stuff on sunday,
family stuff on monday, tuesday, friday, and sunday.
I also make Sarah’s b’day part on saturday night which was very nice in the deliciously cool sloan’s on argyll street.
along side that we spent on night in the rather luxurious and reassuringly expensive Hilton Hotel in Glasgow,
and met a man who teaches at RADA, I found out that trying to get a discussion going with a group of youthworkers on Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen, leads to being laughed at.
I also heard some of the plans for where I work in Easterhouse, nothing official but, 5 parts exciting, 2 parts no that will never work, 7 parts wondering if these changes will be great(or)terrible for me/church/community?

this week we have an appointment at Jacobs nursery now he is in the Kinder room to review progress, I have a club today, a new thing with the RYPI group on Wednesday, a club on Tuesday, my sister is off to Cyprus for 6 months on Tuesday, her birthday is on Friday, I have a late birthday lunch on Wednesday, it looks reasonably busy to be honest

Main Idea In Your Hand
12 months of neighbourliness
a challenge to do one thing a month to spent time and get to know our neighbours better. I think this is easily achievable but need to get a move on in order to get the January task done. I also need to get my wife’s agreement.

Also we need to organise the “The Paget’s have a garden now lets all go and dig it up!” event organised!

Best laid plans:
The bible reading fell by the way side this week. I need to do some serious catch up. I Like where the stories were, just with such a busy week making time to read or blog or even breathe seemed like it was missing.
Also this week, I slipped up in my 2 thirds vegetarianism. Yeah, when at work or cooking my own lunch i try and be vegetarian at lunch times. (meaning my diet is two thirds vegetarian). This week i forgot all about it and had a hot and spicy sausage for lunch. I am not a vegitarian, nor do i strictly ardhear to this at weekends, but i do try on weekdays and I was disappointed by this slip up.

I don’t wanna:
go on this week. stopping time or a holiday would be nice.

A collection of Literature:
with this week being my birthday week I got various things including
I haven’t read it yet but i have been wanting to read it for a while. Thanks to ValleyBoyRich for the generosity.
beyond that I have been reading mostly web stuff like the NSLU2 to Linux project website

I haven’t really listened to much music this week.
On a related matted where do people host podcasts?
I have no idea where to put mine?

5 words to describe how i am feeling:
happy, tired, weary, Ideasy, networked(ish).
